A few nights later I decided to get some more work on the bike done. I realized that this frame has some good potential. I removed the terrible RST 191. Im not sure if that fork has ever worked correctly, it weighed 5.6 LBS and it basically did nothing worthwhile with that 70mm of “travel”. I plan to put a Dimension Steel Mountain Fork on the frame to take off 3.17 LBS. This will be the first rigid bike I have ridden mountain biking, so I am excited to see what will come of it. The Bontrager handlebars and stem are steel and are clearly not for real mountain biking. The bar rises about an inch and the stem rises about another 2 inches, that is not really my idea of ideal riding position. The new bars and stem in order is the Sette Vector Straight Handlebar w/ Sette Venn Stem Combo. Bars weigh 160g and the stem 140g. Not bad for $20. The Bontrager saddle is thick and ugly, I may lose a few grams by getting a racing saddle, but I am doing this purely for looks. Amazing how a racing saddle can make most any bike look a bit more respectable. The saddle of choice for me is always the Sette Amp Saddle. For $25 you can’t do any better. For now the nylon platform pedals will stay since this is a budget build. I know I will eventually swap them out, but not now. Wheelset is very very heavy, but once again the budget build limits me. It has original Bontrager Connection 2 inch tires on it. The tread is still amazing, and a testament to how little my buddy had ridden the bike. To cap off the bike I will throw a tensioner, single speed conversion, ss chain, and some grips on it.

None of this has been ordered yet, pending on whether or not I feel like spending the money this instant. Please leave comments, tips, and links. Thanks!

I recently remembered that a tall buddy of mine had long outgrown his Trek 3700. This bike is sub-par in most every respect, but I paid him $20 to take it off his hands… Everything was in perfect working order on the bike(or at least stock haha.) As a typical guy though, I decided to screw around with almost every part. I know that this base model Trek is not a great bike, but the frame and wheels are solid. I believe the bike weighed in at somewhere around 33 LBS. YIKES! I quickly stripped all shifters, derailleurs and front brake off. Basic Shimano gear I think, but it was very heavy. I switched the rear shifter/brake combo lever out for an Avid FR-5 Brake Lever. Brakes were Tektro brand(not very good brand), I tested this brake and it passed inspection so I will pass on a basic Avid V-brake.
